Sources – Caleb Martin joins 76ers, likely as starter

Forward Caleb Martin has signed a four-year contract worth more than $32 million with the Philadelphia 76ers, sources told ESPN on Saturday.

The 76ers have made a significant deal to sign Martin, a playoff-tested power forward and versatile defender who is joining Philadelphia after three seasons with the Miami Heat.

Martin is expected to be the Sixers’ starting power forward, moving into a frontcourt that currently features All-NBA forward Paul George and MVP center Joel Embiid. He joins a free agent class that includes George, Eric Gordon and Andre Drummond.

According to sources, the Sixers are waiving forward/center Paul Reed, who is on a non-guaranteed contract through next season.

Martin, 28, has had particular success against the NBA champion Boston Celtics, averaging 13.6 points on 50 percent shooting in regular-season and playoff games over the past two years, according to ESPN Stats & Information. It’s the most points per game Martin has allowed against an Eastern Conference opponent.

He has four 25-point games to his credit, including two against the Celtics in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals.

Last season, Martin averaged 10.0 points and 2.2 assists, along with 4.4 rebounds, which was his highest mark ever.
